Testimonials

What Parents & Students Say

"Alvin is a very impressive tutor. We took him on with three weeks to go before Sandy's GCSE English exam. In 3 weeks, Alvin moved our son up 4 grades — from a 2 to a 6."
Rosario — GCSE English
"Absolutely fantastic tutor. Always on time and has worked well with both my children. My older one has been offered places at Bancroft, Chigwell, South Hampstead and City of London Junior School for Girls."
Sid Patel — 7+ Entrance Exams
"My son has been working with Alvin to study his English Literature A-Level for over a year. His confidence has grown so much and his grades have improved to A–B, up from C–D. Thank you so much for all your help!"
Estelle Marasigan — A-Level English
"Alvin has tutored my twin daughters through their GCSE English. After just a couple of weeks they were feeling so much better about English, went on to get good grades, and now really enjoy the subject."
Alice Williams — GCSE English
"Alvin tutored my son in GCSE English and progressed him from a predicted grade of 3 to achieving a 6. He was especially mindful of my son's dyslexia and thoughtful in his preparations. Can't recommend him highly enough."
Julie Cooper — GCSE English
"Alvin has been an invaluable asset helping my son prepare for the 11+. He has been patient, supportive, and committed. My son has demonstrated real progress in his writing and confidence."

I am a graduate of the University of Oxford, where I studied English Language and Literature, specialising in computational sociolinguistics and Medieval Literature. I achieved a first in my dissertation and a high 2:1 overall.

My Approach

How I Teach

The core of my approach is targeted and specific. I identify core weaknesses and strengths in a student's skillset — praising what they do well and finding practical solutions for what they don't. My focus is to fill the gaps that school teachers leave behind, in a hands-on and practical way.

I build skills alongside content. I don't believe speaking at children for an hour is helpful — my lessons are designed so students are active, not passive. I use discrete, chunked exercises: simple, specific puzzles that encourage independence of thought and make learning genuinely engaging.

My tutoring is informed by two well-evidenced principles: (a) focused, discrete improvement on targeted weaknesses, and (b) honest, clear feedback from an external source. I see each lesson like a sports coaching session — a tennis coach would never spend an hour explaining how to hit a forehand; they would get their student doing targeted exercises. My goal is ultimately to make myself unnecessary: to give students the skills they need to succeed independently.

In English I focus on building a core set of transferable skills: analytical ability, vocabulary and prose, structure, memorisation, and exam technique.

Writing: I help students fine-tune their prose through targeted writing exercises — improving technical vocabulary, removing colloquialisms, strengthening sentence construction, and, for more advanced students, mastering argument threading and signposting.

Analysis: I teach students to examine language laterally and articulate its effectiveness. For example, we might spend ten minutes examining an everyday object and writing down everything it could symbolise — developing generative, creative thinking that then feeds directly into essay writing.

In Maths I identify five core areas of weakness — say angles, geometry, fractions, algebra and ratio — and address each one systematically from the ground up using targeted exercises.

I use a variety of methods to explain each topic — bean counters, a deck of cards, real-life problems — before prioritising retention. I am a firm believer in spaced repetition: consistently threading previous topics back into each session so that knowledge is properly ingrained over time.

From the first lesson I establish what the goals of our sessions are, setting concrete, achievable targets. I build an atmosphere of communal activity — using "we" throughout, because I believe the tutor and the student are a team with a shared goal.

Despite the rigour of preparation, I maintain a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere in class. I do not lecture or scold. My aim is for every student to leave each session feeling more capable and more confident than when they arrived.
